COP 9 Outcomes in a Nutshell and in Detail
Thirty-six. That is the number of decisions adopted by the ninth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP9) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) held just over a month ago in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In this presentation, Executive Secretary Luc Gnacadja points out some of the important areas of agreement reached on the four-year work plans and two-year work programmes of the Convention’s main bodies, which were framed from a results-based management approach. It identifies the achievements of the UNCCD’s 1st Scientific Conference that was modeled on standard scientific conferences. The presentation also sums up the participation and key outputs that emerged from the Round Tables of ministers and high-ranking government officials and of Members of Parliament, and the decisions taken concerning the Regional Coordination Mechanisms, the budget, and the Joint Inspection Unit’s Assessment of the Global Mechanism.
The presentation links these key outcomes to the decisions of COP 9. The proceedings of the COP are available in the Report of the Conference of the Parties on its Ninth Session.
