Korean Business Community pledge to support the fight against desertification in their letter to the UN Secretary-General

5/08/11 - Over 80 Business Chief Executive Officers (CEO) in the Republic of Korea expressed their commitments in support of the fight against desertification and land degradation and the mitigation of drought. They signed a declaration letter addressed to the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, vowing "to contribute to advancing the fight against desertification and land degradation and the mitigation of droughts by initiating the first Sustainable Land Management Business Forum on 17 to 18 October 2011 in Changwon, Korea in the context of the tenth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 10)."

The declaration letter is the outcome of the 29th Jeju CEO Summer Forum that took place last August in Jeju Island, the Republic of Korea. The Forum was organized by the Korean Human Development Institute, aiming to provide an opportunity for business leaders to forge collaboration on land while exploring business opportunities. In the declaration letter, the CEOs informed their awareness that "the business community can provide a greater part of the solution required for sustainable development." The UNCCD Executive Secretary Luc Gnacadja was also invited to the Forum. In his presentation to the CEOs, he recalled the 900 million hectares of degraded land around the world which has the potential to be restored and managed sustainably. Gnacadja said, this degraded land "is a huge, untapped resource that could become highly productive and lucrative".
"Soils are pivotal for our physical and economic survival. The depletion of soil nutrients, which we call land degradation, is a major threat to mankind. The private sector is part of the problem and could be a greater part of the solution," he added.

The commitment of these CEOs is a good antecedent to the UNCCD Sustainable Land Management Business Forum, that will take place on 17 and 18 October 2011 at the occasion of the forthcoming tenth session of the Conference of the Parties of the UNCCD (COP 10). The Business Forum aims of raise awareness among the business community of the importance of land and in particular issues of desertification, land degradation and drought and encourage their active involvement in the protection of soil.
