CSOs at the conferences

Introduction

The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) provides a excellent platform for the full participation of the civil society organizations not only at the national level as stakeholders responsible for the implementation of the UNCCD but also at the decision making level ensuring their participation at the sessions of the Conference of the Parties (COP)  to the Convention. CSO representatives can participate as observers to the official sessions of the COP and its subsidiary bodies so as to bring the voice of the population living in affected areas to the international arena.

In addition to their interventions during the official sessions and the possibility to organize side events, the COP also agreed to organize at each session the so called Open Dialogue Sessions with the CSOs. During these sessions the civil society representatives organize the agenda and set up a scenario to exchange with the Parties, UN agencies and Intergovernmental Organizations on issues that are of relevance for the civil society.

CSOs that would like to attend the sessions of the COP and its subsidiary bodies will need to seek observer status through the accreditation to the sessions  http://www.unccd.int/en/Stakeholders/civil-society/Accreditation-process/Pages/default.aspx)
