The 11th session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST 11) took place in Windhoek, Namibia from 17 to 20 September 2013 at the occasion of the 11th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11).
COP 11 is convened under the theme “A stronger UNCCD for a Land-Degradation Neutral World”.
The CST contributed to the efforts of strengthening the UNCCD by providing advice on a series of key issues, including:
- How best to measure progress towards the UNCCD strategic objectives: indicators for sustainable land and ecosystem management, poverty reduction and global environmental benefits;
- How to improve the provision of scientific advice on desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD) issues;
- Economic assessment of desertification: a review of the outcomes of the UNCCD 2nd scientific conference;
- How to improve the brokering of scientific and technical knowledge on DLDD, including traditional knowledge, best practices and success stories.
The CST also discussed progress made in organizing the UNCCD 3rd scientific conference and decided on the theme to be addressed at the 4th scientific conference.
Other issues on the CST agenda were: the roster of experts, the fellowship programme and the CST multi-year work plan.
