Xinhua News Agency to spread message on land restoration globally
18/09/12. Luc Gnacadja, Executive Secretary of the UNCCD and Mr LI Congjun, President Xinhua News Agency, have signed a memorandum of understanding to spread the message of land restoration globally in order to avert the threat of desertification, land degradation and drought. The signing ceremony, took place yesterday in Beijing, China.
The People’s Republic of China is one of 166 countries around the world that are affected by land degradation. But China is also affected by desertification, that is, land degradation of its drylands – the arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas.
With over 150 bureaus around the world, the UNCCD will work with the media agency to disseminate globally the efforts and successes the country has achieved in restoring degraded land. In June, the Xinhua, together with the UNCCD secretariat and other sponsors, co-organized the Asia Regional Media Workshop on Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, China.
