24/09/2013 – Windhoek, Namibia. The delegation of Turkey has announced that they are ready and willing to host the next UNCCD Conference of Parties in 2015.
The proposal was warmly welcomed by delegates participating in the High Level Segment of the eleventh session of the Conference of Parties of the UNCCD, currently meeting in Namibia. Turkey has long been an active leader on the issues of desertification, land degradation and drought.
The Republic of Turkey has many programs and policies focusing on reducing desertification and implementing the convention nationally. For instance, a four-year National Afforestation and Erosion Control Mobilization Action Plan was completed in 2012 and 2.4 mill ha of area was rehabilitated and reforested.
Turkey has also completed a national strategy document for combatting desertification (2013-2023) in line with the Ten-Year Strategy of the UNCCD, and they are currently revising their national action plan.
On a regional and international level, Turkey has previously hosted meetings of the bodies of the UNCCD, and is planning to establish “Regional Research Center for Combatting Desertification”. Turkey has also hosted an International Workshop on Combatting Desertification for the last five years.
Through its Permanent Representative of Turkey to the UN, it is one of the core members of the recently launched initiative, “Group of Friends of Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought”.
