Delegates met in contact groups most of the day to finalize agreement on the outstanding issues of the follow-up to the outcomes of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio + 20), the biennium budget for 2014-2015 and the location home of the Global Mechanism.
Early evening, the Eleventh session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation (CRIC11) met and finalized its recommendations to the Conference of the Parties. During the CRIC11 session, four Vice Chairs were elected to serve in its 13th and 14th sessions.
The vice-chairs are: Mr. Richard J. Mwendandu (Kenya); Mr. Worapong Waramit (Thailand); Mr Yuriy Kolmaz (Ukraine); and Mr. Patrick Wegerdt (European Union).
The Committee of the Whole also met and finalized its recommendations to the Parties, following which a COP Plenary convened and adopted the recommendations from CRIC11 and the COW. Honorable Ben Amathila (Namibia), representing the 10th Round Table of Members of Parliament, also read out their declaration.
The closing plenary was convened in the early hours of Saturday morning, 28 September, after the Committee of the Whole agreed on the budget for the 2014-2015 biennium.
COP11 President presented the Namib Declaration, signaling Namibia’s some of the action areas it intends to play a lead role during its two year term as COP11 President. Representatives of the regional groups, outgoing UNCCD Executive Secretary Gnacadja and COP11 President Uahekua Herunga made closing statements, and the COP11 President called the COP to a close at 1:30am.
