Friday, 16 October 2015
The twelfth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP12 ) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will take place in Ankara, Turkey. Gender Day, which will take place on Friday, 16 October 2015
, will focus on policy actions to ensure women are leading agents of positive change in the pursuit of a land degradation neutral world and that they are resilient to climate change. These issues will be considered in the context of the challenges most faced by women land users, such as land rights and their involvement in decision-making.
Women play a vital role both in the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the climate change agenda. Thus, participants will identify the policy actions needed to boost women’s empowerment so that they can play a more effective role in creating wealth for their families and minimizing the negative effects of climate change. COP12 Gender Day builds on the Windhoek Initiative on Women’s Empowerment contained in the Namibia Declaration. It builds on the Gender Policy Advocacy Framework agreed by the Parties at COP12.
