Niger Leads West Africa in Addressing Drought and Famine

The United States is experiencing its worst drought since records began. So are many African countries, especially those bordering the Sahel, which are still hit by drought and famine. As part of Food for 9 Billion Series, Fred de Sam Lazaro of the PBS Newshour team, documents how Niger is preparing for its crisis. The video report reflects the impacts of the spreading desertification on food security and livelihoods. The words of Niger’s President Mahamadou Issoufou offer hope: “Niger must address Desertification if it is to get beyond the chronic food emergencies.”
