The Portuguese Meteorological and Geophysical Association (APMG) organized a Workshop titled “Drought in a Changing Climate – an Overview” on November 16, 2012 in Lisbon. The meeting was conducted in the form of an interactive discussion panel with a purpose of contributing to a better scientific and technical understanding of drought issues.
Experts from international and regional institutions including United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), delivered speeches and discussed the following topics:
- Need to develop national and regional drought policies
- European and Portuguese Projects drought management
- Drought variability, climatic change and scenarios
- Drought impact on various socio-economic fields as agriculture, water resources and desertification.
The Workshop served as a preparatory event for the High-level Meeting on National Drought Policy (HMNDP) which will take place on March 11-15, 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland. Organized by UNCCD and WMO in collaboration with a number of UN agencies, key national agencies, governmental and private institutions, HMNDP will promote a forward-looking approach for drought mitigation and planning measures, and provide practical insight into science-based actions to address the key drought issues. The ultimate goal is to create more drought resilient societies.
Portugal, hit by extreme drought in 2012, is interested in adoption comprehensive strategies in order to cope with extended periods of water shortages.
APMG is a non-profit scientific and professional society, that brings together technicians, professors, researchers and students, involved in several fields of meteorology, geophysics and related areas, affiliated with various national services, state laboratories, universities and private companies.
