The International Conference on Ecology of Aral: Sustainable Development and International cooperation was organized by the Ministry of Nature Protection of Turkmenistan and was attended by 400 participants from governmental agencies, institutions, universities, project implementing agencies of the concerned countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, China, Russian, UK, Canada, Belarus, Ukraine, and Mongolia) and representatives of UNDP, UNEP, the Secretariat of UNCCD, FAO, WB, UNECE, UNRRCA, EU, Turkey International Cooperation Agency (TICA), ICARDA, Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFSA), and other international institutions and universities from neighbouring countries. The conference was composed of three sessions, namely, Session One is focused on Ecology of the Aral Sea—Priority Direction for Cooperation in the Region; Session Two: Prevention of Desertification Processes, Biodiversity and Environment Protection in the Aral Region through Afforestation; and Session Three: Sustainable Water Resources Management in the Aral Region.
The Minister of Nature Protection of Turkmenistan chaired the Opening Ceremony and vice Prime Minister addressed the conference the congratulatory message of the Esteemed President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. Senior delegates from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, representatives of UNDP and UNEP, Ambassador of EU to Central Asian countries made remarks at the opening Ceremony on behalf of concerned UN agencies and leading countries’ governments.
