On the occasion of the World Day to Combat Desertification on 17 June 2013, the Land Development Department and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, which is the UNCCD National Focal Point, organized a seminar to celebrate this important day and to raise awareness among stakeholders, including public agencies, private agencies, mass media, CSOs and farmers, on land degradation, desertification and drought.
There were 120 participants at the seminar, which consisted of both lectures and panel discussions. The key topics discussed in these lectures and discussions were the importance of land resources towards food security, economics of land degradation, and the current water situation in Thailand. The seminar put emphasis on making sure that the participants gained knowledge and new perspectives by actively sharing their views on possible improvements for the work of the UNCCD.
Finally, the 2013 Dryland Champions certificates were presented to three awardees, in recognition their significant contributions to the resistance of land degradation, desertification and drought.
