The Briefing Session on Regional Cooperative Mechanism
for Drought Monitoring and Early Warning was held on January 24, 2014 at UNCC
in Bangkok, Thailand, with participants from 13
agencies, including UNESCAP, FAO, UNCCD, WFP, UNEP and other regional
institutions and organizations and government bodies.
The Briefing Session was led by the Director, Information and Communications Technology
and Disaster Risk Reduction Division, UNESCAP, who highlighted the nature of regional drought cooperative mechanism, a
regional cooperation framework launched since 2010. The Briefing Session was
intended to identify potential partnership and cooperative synergy among
agencies and governmental departments.
The session discussed disaster risk reduction and
regional cooperative development in Asia and the Pacific region since the launching of the Regional Drought Mechanism.
The session also heard
from representatives from ADPC, RIMES and AIT
elaborating on their early warning projects concerning technical assistance,
capacity building on end-end early warning system,
forecast generation and other issues. The representative
of UNCCD expressed interesting in active involvement of Asian TPNs and other
subregional and national centres in all efforts and initiatives in early warning, drought mitigation and
disaster risk reduction management along with the NAP and UNCCD implementation
at national and regional levels.
