Russia responses to the aggravating desertification processes through establishment of UNCCD center

​Minister of natural resources and environment of the Russian Federation Sergey Donskoy instructed relevant departments on the Ministry together with scientific organizations to investigate a possibility to create a national center of the UNCCD in Russia. 

Excessive plowing of agricultural lands and unsustainable use of pastures in arid areas are the main factors triggering desertification processes in Russia. Currently, about 100 million hectares of land in the Russian Federation are subject to degradation and desertification. These lands are home to about 50% of the population and 70% of the agricultural output is produced on these lands. Presently, 33 regions of Russia are affected by desertification.
