The Drylands and Desert Restoration Hub is the website for a European funded project for cooperation in science in technology, related to desertification and drylands.
COST 2014-2020 is a programme for European COoperation in Science and Technology. COST is a framework programme, consisting of various sub-programmes. Every sub-programme consist of several actions ("COST Actions"). Amongst these is COST Action 1104, called "Arid Lands Restoration and Combat of Desertification: Setting Up a Drylands and Desert Restoration Hub", which resides within the domain of Earth System Science and Environmental Management (ESSEM).
The arid lands and desert restoration hub focuses on knowledge and dissemination of dryland restoration techniques, methods, principles, key people and key organizations as well, successful projects and facilitating new projects. This COST Action commenced in 2012 and will continue for 4 years until the beginning of June 2016.
Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSMs)
Short-Term Scientific Missions facilitate scientists going to an institution or laboratory in another country to foster collaboration, to learn a new technique or to take measurements using instruments and/or methods not available in their own institution/laboratory. Financial support may be provided to eligible applicants to carry out a STSM that will specifically contribute to the scientific objectives of this COST Action.
Funding for Short-Term Scientific Missions
In support of Action ES1104, COST can provide financial support to eligible applicants to carry out a Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) that will contribute to the scientific objectives of this COST Action. Grants for funding STSMs are awarded in quarterly rounds. The next application deadlines are:
- 15 April for missions in June and August 2014
- 15 July for missions in September and November 2014
- 15 October for missions in December 2014 and February 2015
In addition to the quarterly rounds opportunities for grants for specific research topics are also announced on the Desert Restoration Hub website, and on the Capacity Building Marketplace.
COST Training Schools aim at widening, broadening and sharing knowledge relevant to the goals of the COST Action 1104. In 2013 two Training Schools were hosted, a third one is planned for 2014. Often funding for young scientists is offered to participate in the training schools. These grants are announced on a regular basis.
COST Action 1104 consists of 5 working groups. Working Group 5 Knowledge Transfer, Outreach and Training publishes information and resources on the Desert Restoration Hub website.
Capacity Building Marketplace
Opportunities and events from COST Action 1104 are frequently posted on the UNCCD Capacity Building Marketplace. You can find them in the grants section and the events section.
