There are numerous organizations that cooperate with the UNCCD on capacity building to fight desertification, land degradation and drought in countries around the world.
The UNCCD actively works on establishing and promoting these partnerships and cooperations. On the Capacity Building Marketplace we provide links to tools, services and expertise from these partner organizations, and we help you find partners that support you in your work to fight desertification, land degradation and drought.
UN System Organizations
Various United Nations system organizations support the implementation of the UNCCD while carrying their own programmes and processes. Capacity building is an important contribution to this for most UN System organizations. Together with the secretariats of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the UNCCD established a Joint Liaison Group (JLG). The three Bonn based secretariats work together by collecting and sharing information on their work programmes and operations, and aim to harness collaboration. The three conventions together offer a range of tools, services and expertise that assist vulnerable countries and communities in enabling effective adaptation and achieving sustainable development. Through facilitating knowledge-sharing and learning, strengthening technical and institutional capacities, and facilitating access to financial and technological support, the Rio Conventions support Parties in undertaking the full adaptation cycle: from assessing impacts, risks and vulnerability, to planning and implementing adaptation actions, to monitoring and evaluation.
Also many other UN system organizations support the capacity building efforts of the UNCCD, through their own programmes and processes and in in their efforts to achieve the millennium development goals (MDGs). They approach desertification, land degradation and drought, based on their own mandates, for example improving food security or promoting rural investments.
Partnerships with other organizations
Country Parties to the UNCCD have the lead role in implementing the Convention and reaching the objectives of the 10-Year Strategy. However, success often depends on, or is significantly supported by, the actions of specific stakeholder groups. The UNCCD works with partners on many levels, Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), parliamentarian’s and businesses.
