Rania Bou Kheir; Professor

Rania Bou kheir holds an agricultural engineering diploma (1997), a MSc. (grade – good) from the academic agency of French speaking-countries (1998), and a PhD (highly honorable with congratulations of the committee) (2002) in the application of remote sensing and GIS for natural resource inventory mapping and management. In July 2007, she got the accreditation to supervise research from the University of Pierre and Marie Curie Paris 6. She did a postdoctoral research (2004) at the University of Southern California USC (GIS research laboratory) beneficiating from a USA Fulbright scholarship. In addition, she has been qualified by the Ministry of higher education and research (France) as a professor (qualification number – 08135184790) for 2 sections (1) section 35 – Structure and evolution of the earth and other planets; and (2) section 36 – Solid earth & geodynamics. Professional Experience Rania Bou kheir is a professor at the Lebanese University (2008-present) giving lectures related to environmental protection and sustainable development, and participating in national committees on science and technology. Her research experience is extensive. She spent around 10 years (1998-2008) in the Lebanese National Council for Scientific Research, as involved in several EU and international projects (Program evaluation, environmental project management/initiating/planning/budgeting/staff-ing/control/performance/closure). In addition, she is an expert consultant (senior scientist) with Aarhus University (from October 2008 – till present) for digital mapping of Danish organic soils at national scale (10 million Euros) as part of climate change mitigation. She has been working also with Aarhus University on designing, supervising, analyzing and management of on-going development/research & public service projects, quality control & performance; Involved in publishing in diverse scientific circles (international journals, reports, conferences, etc.), reviewing papers in several international scientific journals, and books editing. Moreover, she worked as an expert consultant on environmental issues (from field survey to national/regional scales) with the German Technical Cooperation GTZ (Germany), the Arab League ACSAD Centre for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development), GEF (Global Environmental Facility), and ESCWA (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia). She is an evaluator (and rapporteur) of research proposals submitted to the European Commission (in the frame of the FP7 Cooperation Specific Programme). In addition, she is an evaluator of research proposals and projects (2009 to date) submitted to Qatar Foundation and the African National Research Foundation. In addition to her work in the research domain, she taught MSc. and Ph.D. students (27/11 to 9/12/2002) at Brandenburgische Technische Universitat (Germany) the course of Environmental Impact Assessment. She has been selected by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES – Washington) as a panelist for KAUST discovery scholarships (December 2007 – Bahrain). Moreover, she taught at several universities various courses of an interdisciplinary nature (e.g., environmental geology, soil science, geography and agro-meteorology, theories of remote sensing, interpretation of satellite imageries, principles and applications of GIS). She was advisor/co-advisor for several PhD students working on their doctoral research in French, German and Danish Universities. As of December 2013, she authored and co-authored four graduation theses (engineering diploma, MSc, Ph.D. & professorship), 50 scientific papers in peer-reviewed international scientific journals, 75 papers in international and national conferences, participated in books and scientific reports editing (European commission, UNEP, UNESCO, UNCCD, ESCWA, ACSAD, GTZ, etc.) and has prepared 12 teaching documents. Honours and Awards Rania Bou Kheir received several honours and awards (e.g., «J. William Fulbright» award from the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) – Washington (July 2004), «Great Women of the 21st Century – Environmental Sciences» award from the American Biographical Institute (August 2005), Marie-Curie scholarship/European commission (April 2006), The 10th Anniversary of Franco-Lebanese CÈDRE program award for good research and publications (June 2006)], and The francophone award for young researchers (section science and medicine) (December 2011, Paris - France) by the academic agency of francophone countries (90 countries and 800 institutions included) to recognize excellence in the research field (after a competition between applicants from the 90 francophone countries based on the scientific career and number of publications in international scientific journals with high impact factor). She is a member of several international networks and committees [erosion network – IRD (France), remote sensing network (Academic agency of French-speaking countries), «International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), «European Geosciences Union», etc.]. She is reviewer of publications in several international scientific journals, and a member of the editorial board of the Geomorphology journal. She is fluent in Arabic, English and French
