Senior Research Scientist with the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (IAMB), Italy since 1999. Project Manager of the EU-funded MEDCOASTLAND Thematic Network (2002-2007) that grouped together 36 research, education, decision/policy making institutions, farmer associations and environmental NGOs coming from 13 Euro Mediterranean countries. Prior to joining the IAMB, Visiting Scientist (for two years) with the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre at Ispra, Italy and Senior Fulbright Research Scholar (for five years) at the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA NRCS) in Washington, D.C. Graduated in 1981 from the Agricultural University of Tirana in native Albania and pursued graduate studies and research in the USA sponsored by the Fulbright Foundation. Author and co-author of more than 75 articles and technical reports and is Editor-In-Chief of 12 books. The latest edited book “Land Degradation and Desertification: Assessment, Mitigation and Remediation” was published by Springer in 2010 and has been one of the top 25% most downloaded eBooks in the relevant Springer eBook Collection in 2012.Member of the: International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS), Soil, Crop and Agronomy Society of America, Fulbright Association, Alumni Association of the EC JRC, Educational Board of CIHEAM-IAMB, European Soil Bureau Network (ESBN) of the EC, Deputy Secretary of the former Working Group on Land Degradation and Desertification of the IUSS, member of the Steering Committee of the DesertNet International (DNI) Association, member of the Editorial Board of the Soil Atlas of Europe and Chair of the Soil chapter of the World Atlas of Desertification being prepared by EC/UNEP.
