Mr Gnacadja drew attention to a growing global shift in policy and public perceptions of the significance of land degradation in relation to climate change. He said the salience of land degradation had increased, and that the Climate Conference in Copenhagen had provided a new opportunity to advocate the importance of sustainable land and water management in climate change mitigation and adaptation, and of the synergy between the UNCCD and the post-2012 climate change agreement.

Ambassador Abdullah Alsaidi, described the links between the impacts of climate change and land degradation that include soil erosion and compromised water quality and quantity. He said these effects are critical for developing countries, and stressed the importance of synergy and coordination of activities among the three sister Rio Conventions on biological diversity, climate change and desertification.
