Terms and conditions

The Land for Life Award can be given to individuals, teams, institutions, businesses, research institutes, public offices, political leaders, decision-makers, journalists, media, non-governmental organizations and civil society organizations whose work and initiatives have made a significant and innovative contribution to sustainable land management, or any other entity that the organizers may consider fit.

There are no restrictions on participation with regard to race, gender, nationality, religious beliefs, political views or geographical location.

Entries should be submitted by filling an application form, preferably on-line. Hard copies will also be accepted.

Any self-candidacy to the award should be supported by at least two reputable entities that can write a statement of reference. The references must explain their motivation for supporting the candidate. The supporting references should not be directly involved in the candidate's projects or related to the candidates, but be familiar with their activities.

Short-listed candidates may be contacted by the organizer for verification and clarification of their application.

Electronic entries must be received no later than 15 March 2013. Hard copies must have been mailed by the same date before midnight local time as certified by the postal service stamp. Entries will not be accepted after this date.

Candidacies will be short-listed solely on the basis of the information contained in the submitted application form.

Entries will be screened and short-listed initially by the organizers for the consideration of the jury. The organizers reserve the right to choose the jury members as they see fit. The composition of the jury will be made public before it holds its first session.

The selection of award winners and all related decisions are at the jury's sole discretion. The jury may decide to split an award between several individuals or institutions if it appears that they equally deserve recognition for the achievements it wants to honor. The jury's decisions are final.

The jury reserves the right to award the prize without providing a monetary reward. This would occur if the honor is bestowed to a business or other organization that is not in need of financial resources to scale-up their initiatives. In this case, the prize would include a medal and the honor and publicity that accompany winning the Land for Life award. It would also include, where appropriate, flights and accommodation to the award ceremony and the creation of a video about the project.

Any expenditure incurred for applying is made at the candidate's own expense.

The candidates are responsible for their own insurance against all eventualities arising from participating in or completing any assignment linked to the Land for Life Award, however caused.

The organizers accept no responsibility or liability for personal injury, loss of goods or articles or any other accident.

The organizers reserve the right to circulate applications submitted to the awards, or to circulate extracts or photographs to whichever body they deem appropriate and/or to publish them in the respective publications of the partners to the award.

Finalists and short-listed applicants may be asked to participate in media and publicity activities.

Relatives of UNCCD employees, partners or Jury members are not eligible to apply.

Non-cash prizes or trips cannot be converted to cash prizes under any circumstances.

These terms and conditions are subject to change without prior notification.
