In September 2011, the United Nations General Assembly held a high-level meeting on the theme, “Addressing desertification, land degradation and drought in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication.”
The meeting was attended by heads of state and government and high-ranking government officials. In the context of Rio+20, many countries called for a land degradation neutral world with a sustainable development target of “zero-net land degradation”.
The meeting was held following a December 2010 General Assembly resolution on “Implementation of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification in Those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, Particularly in Africa” (A/RES/65/160).
