The Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), following decision 18/COP.10, has the pleasure to inform that the UNCCD’s 3rd Scientific Conference will take place in 2014 under the theme “Combating DLDD for poverty reduction and sustainable development: the contribution of science, technology, traditional knowledge and practices”.

BACKGROUND
The UNCCD Scientific Conferences were initiated, through decision 13/COP.8, to reshape the Committee on Science and Technology (CST), in line with The UNCCD 10 Year Strategy (The Strategy). The intention of the predominantly scientific and technical conference-style format for the CST meetings is to strengthen the capacity of the CST to process scientific, technical and socio-economic information, and to generate policy recommendations for transfer to the UNCCD Conference of the Parties (COP).

In order to facilitate the efficient implementation of a predominantly scientific and technical conference-style format for the CST meetings, and to address the selected priority theme, decision 13/COP.8 requested the Bureau of the CST,  in collaboration with the selected lead institution/consortium to organize the conference and with the support of the UNCCD secretariat,  to involve relevant networks, institutions, agencies, bodies and scientific organizations at the regional and sub-regional levels, non-governmental organizations and other civil society stakeholders in addressing the theme of the Conference.
