Following a request of the COP (decision 17/COP.9), the UNCCD Secretariat has been supporting the organization of pilot impact indicator tracking exercises at the national level. Organized with the technical support of the UNEP - World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and with the financial support of the Government of Spain and of the European Commission, the pilot exercise informed the process of refinement of the UNCCD impact indicators and allowed UNCCD Parties, the Committee on Science and Technology and the Secretariat to gain experience with their successful use in preparation for the reporting and review process in 2012-2013. The participating countries were: Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, China, Colombia, Mexico, Senegal, Portugal, Spain, South Africa and Tunisia.
The pilot exercise was officially launched through a Multi-National Inception Workshop on 11-13 July 2011 at the Sub-Regional Headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Mexico City, Mexico.
The pilot concluded with a 2nd Multi-National workshop held on 6-7 October 2011 and a side event, entitled "Iterative improvement through national pilots: The UNCCD impact indicators piloting exercises", held at the 10th session of the UNCCD COP in Changwon, Republic of Korea.
The main results and conclusions of the pilot are summarized in the final report.
