| Work Experience | Wind erosion control and sand dune stabilization practices carried out by the Soil and Water Conservation Service of Turkey (TOPRAKSU) during 1962-1972. The Project was about 16,000 HA near the town of Karapinar in the drainless depression in Central Anatolia. I was working as a field engineer in this project. Unfavorable climatic conditions, very weak and sparse vegetation coupling with over-grazing and excessive cultivation caused severe wind erosion producing sand sunes in the middle of Anatolia and turning it into a desert area. Active sand dunes threatened Konya-Adana highway, caused traffic accidents, made living conditions unbearable to the people in Karapinar and the population started to move to safer places. Control practices were carried out in four sections as follows: (a) Wind erosion practices on sandy soils and small dunes (b) stabilization practices on active sand dunes © deforestation practices on the hills and (d) Construction of deep wells for irrigation. |
