During that period, acting as a host of the key project "Improving site quality of Chinese fir plantations and pathways to increase productivity", attempting to find out the practical approaches such as mixing Chinese fir with certain broad-leaved species, fertilization, intercropping with legume crops, etc., to sustain the productivity of Chinese fir plantations on successive rotation. Since 1996, hosting a national key project titled "Demonstrative study on utilization of shrub and grass land along Yangtzi River, which is aimed to explore practical approaches of fully utilizing the hilly land to gain better economic benefit without doing harm to the environment.
