The UNCCD Science-Policy Interface (SPI) was established in 2013 and promotes dialogue between scientists and policy makers on desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD). The composition of the SPI is designed to provide independent scientific perspective from the full range of disciplines relevant to the UNCCD, taking into account regional and global issues and policy considerations.

The SPI works to translate current science into policy-relevant recommendations resulting from assessments and synthesis of current science. This includes collaborating with and leveraging the products of other scientific panels and bodies, producing peer-reviewed technical reports and science-policy briefs and conducting peer-reviews of other scientific assessments and science-based communications. 

SPI report on sustainable land management

The SPI report “Sustainable Land Management Contribution to Successful Land-based Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation” provides scientifically sound practical guidance for selecting sustainable land management (SLM) practices that help address DLDD, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and for creating an enabling environment for their large-scale implementation considering local realities. It targets a broad audience from scientists, policy makers, landowners, community stakeholders and enterprises.
