2022 reporting process tools

Following the guidance received by Parties during COP 14, UNCCD Convention institutions reviewed and updated modalities for UNCCD reporting. 

To increase transparency and share with Parties important milestones in preparing new reporting tools, draft documents related to some of the reporting methodologies and indicators were made progressively available for peer review by National Focal Points and Science and Technology Correspondents of the UNCCD, as well as technical experts as appropriate.  

Reporting guidelines 

Reporting manual

The reporting manual provides step-by-step methodological guidance for the preparation of national reports. The English version of the reporting manual for the 2022 reporting process can he found here. Other UN language versions will be posted soon.  

Reporting glossary

The glossary contains the main and most frequently used terms used in the UNCCD reporting framework and how the UNCCD defines them for reporting purposes. The reporting glossary in all UN languages will be posted soon.  

Good practice guidance  

Good practice guidance SDG indicator 15.3.1: Proportion of degraded land over total land area. Versionl 2.0

This revised, upgraded and improved version of Good Practice Guidance for SDG Indicator 15.3.1 informs the work of Parties, particularly on monitoring and understanding the status of land cover, land productivity and soil organic carbon stocks. These are the three major variables used to measure the proportion of land that is degraded over total land area.

Good practice guidance for national reporting on UNCCD strategic objective 3

This Good Practice Guidance informs reporting on UNCCD strategic objective 3 which aims at mitigating, adapting to, and managing the effects of drought in order to enhance resilience of vulnerable populations and ecosystems. It provides guidance for global level reporting of the hazard posed by drought, the population exposed to drought and the vulnerability of those exposed to harm.

Methodological notes  

Methodological note: Trends in populations exposure to land degradation. A disaggregate approach by gender

This methodological note provides guidance for estimating the proportion of populations exposed to land degradation disaggregated by sex, as a first step towards addressing the gender data gap on land degradation issues within the UNCCD reporting framework.

Methodological note: Accounting framework to report on UNCCD strategic objective 5

This methodological note informs reporting on UNCCD strategic objective 5 which aims at mobilizing substantial and additional financial and non-financial resources to support the implementation of the Convention by building effective partnerships at global and national level.

Re-evaluation of the current biodiversity indicator and associate metrics for UNCCD strategic objective 4

This report reviews existing indicators and metrics for reporting on biodiversity and recommends, in addition to the Red List Index, a new indicator as an area-based measure of national responses to conserving biodiversity, namely trends in protected area coverage of important biodiversity areas.
