Governance

Governance is a vital part of any organization. It ensures accountability, oversight and ultimately makes sure the organization achieves its goal. 

UNCCD has a number of governing bodies: the Conference of Parties (COP), the Committee on Science and Technology (CST), The Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC), and Intergovernmental Working Groups (IWG).  

These bodies make sure that UNCCD is accountable, effective, efficient, inclusive, responsive, transparent. They ensure that the organization in following the rule of law embraces a participatory and consensus-oriented approach. 

Governing bodies roles and responsibilities 

The Conference of Parties (COP) was established by the Convention as the supreme decision-making body. It oversees the implementation of the Convention and comprises of governments and organizations such as the European Union.  

The Committee on Science and Technology (CST) was established as a subsidiary body of the COP to provide it with information and advice on scientific and technological matters. 

The Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC) was established as a subsidiary body to the COP to assist it in regularly reviewing the implementation of the Convention. 

Intergovernmental Working Groups (or ad-hoc intersessional groups, AIWG) are established by the COP to assess specific issues, such as effective policy and implementation measures for drought and the evaluation of the Strategic Framework.
