Drought risks are increasingly managed by recognizing the links between water, energy, food and ecosystems (WEFE). Examples of WEFE-based solutions include  agro-photovoltaics, biogas production, small-scale water conservation efforts and solar desalination. Due to its many co-benefits, the WEFE approach is now part of national policies in countries like Egypt, Italy, Spain and Tunisia, while also gaining traction from the European Union and the Union for the Mediterranean.
