As we gear up to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Convention on 17 June, cultural events around Bonn – home of the Secretariat and the host of this year's Desertification and Drought Day global observance – reflect the city's mission as the hub of international cooperation and cultural diversity. The 2024 edition of the Over the Border Music Diversity Festival, which UNCCD has been supporting throughout its eight-year history, will present a musical journey through urban Afrobeats, jazz sessions, Latin salsa and cumbia, Balkan beats and Celtic folk evenings. The Conference of Parties at its fifteenth session (UNCCD COP 15) established an Intergovernmental Working Group on Drought during the triennium 2022 - 2024, tasked with identifying and evaluating global policy instruments and regional policy frameworks in the context of the national plans to effectively manage drought under the Convention, including supporting a shift from reactive to proactive drought management. Leading up to UNCCD COP16, the group will hold the next (fifth) meting in La Serena, Chile on 18-21 March 2024) and the sixth and final meeting will take place in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on 3-6 June 2024 to address the following topics: Financing mechanisms for drought resilience; Setting of global target and global work programme for drought resilience Legally binding protocol or Amendment to the Convention Non-legally binding decisions, political declaration, or other kind of non-legally binding instruments outside the Convention

World Environment Day 2024 is focusing on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. Hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Riyadh, where UNCCD COP16 will also take place later this year, it will demonstrate the country's strong commitment to delivering solution to today's environmental crises. Recharged global action to protect and restore productive land has the power to boost livelihoods, support food security, build resilience to extreme weather and increase carbon storage.

The global theme of Desertification and Drought Day 2024, “United for land. Our Legacy. Our Future,” emphasizes the transformative power of sustainable land management as a key solution to today’s challenges – a blueprint to a better future on land for future generations. The global observance of the Desertification and Drought Day 2024 will be hosted by the Government of Germany, together with the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the City of Bonn, that has been home to the UNCCD Secretariat since 1999. The global observance event at the Bundeskunsthalle will also mark the 30th anniversary of UNCCD, will bring together world leaders, youth and prominent personalities from academia, civil society, sports and entertainment.

The next UNCCD COP16 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – the largest-ever meeting of UNCCD’s 197 Parties, the first to be held in the Middle East region and the largest multilateral conference ever hosted by Saudi Arabia. Happening in the year that also marks the 30th anniversary of the UNCCD. COP16 is set to become a landmark event for accelerating action on land restoration, drought resilience and green transition.
