L’activité a réuni des femmes, des jeunes, des leaders communautaires et d’autres acteurs locaux autour de discussions, témoignages, séances de sensibilisation et d’une visite de terrain sur la dégradation des terres, la préservation de l’eau, la protection des forêts, l’adaptation aux changements climatiques et la restauration des écosystèmes. Elle a également mis en avant les droits humains, l’égalité de genre et l’engagement communautaire comme leviers d’une gestion inclusive et durable des ressources naturelles.

Desert Research Center in collaboration with International Fund for Agricultural Development will celebrate the Day alongside UNCCD COP17 preparatory meeting in Marsa-Matrouh City, Matrouh Governorate.

GIZ and Kenya’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development will co-host a stakeholder roundtable to discuss ways to scale up sustainable rangeland management and drought resilience in Kenya’s ASAL regions. The event will bring together policymakers, practitioners, development partners, research institutions and community organizations to share solutions, align priorities and strengthen climate-resilient livestock systems, secure land tenure, women’s leadership and pastoral livelihoods. Its main outcome will be a high-level brief outlining priority actions and investment opportunities for rangeland restoration and drought resilience.

Under the theme “Rangelands: Recognize. Respect. Restore.”  the 2026 global observance event will highlight the central role of the world’s rangelands in climate resilience, food and water security, biodiversity conservation and the cultural identity of pastoralist and Indigenous communities.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry Lesotho commemorated Desertification and Drought Day 2026 and the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists in Sebitia, Berea, under the theme “Rangelands: Recognize, Respect, Restore.” The event highlighted community-led rangeland restoration, sustainable grazing practices and the role of herders and pastoralists in restoring degraded ecosystems and protecting livelihoods.

A major national event in Morondava brings together stakeholders to raise awareness of land degradation, drought, biodiversity loss and environmental protection, honored by the presence of the President of the Refoundation of the Republic of Madagascar.

ADCE MALI will mark the IDay to with the National Youth Forum on Land Resilience and Climate Mobility, bringing together youth leaders, government representatives, development partners, civil society, private sector actors and international institutions. The forum will focus on solutions to land degradation, desertification, climate resilience and climate mobility, while promoting green entrepreneurship, green jobs and stronger youth participation in climate action.

OTVI, in collaboration with the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria and RATEI, held a field activity in Yolde Pate Community, Adamawa State, combining community advocacy, agroforestry education and a practical tree-planting demonstration. The event attracted over 120 participants and led to concrete commitments from community leaders and elders to curb deforestation, including sanctions requiring offenders to plant and nurture trees. Participants also committed to preserving regenerated trees, while the Ministry of Forestry pledged seedlings for future afforestation efforts.

OTVI hosted a webinar on restoring rangelands and strengthening communal resilience, bringing together experts in climate action, mental health, research and humanitarian response. The session highlighted the links between land degradation, drought, flooding and mental health impacts such as anxiety, depression and trauma, while exploring early warning systems, alternatives to charcoal use and the integration of psychosocial support into climate adaptation policies.

The project will engage primary and secondary students in Bauchi and Plateau States through environmental education, sensitization sessions and tree planting across five schools. Reaching over 2,000 students, eight teachers and school administrators, the activity will highlight the role of trees in preventing land degradation, combating desertification and restoring ecosystems. Students will adopt and monitor seedlings over time, building practical conservation skills and a lasting sense of environmental responsibility in their schools, homes and communities.

Nationwide commemorative activities focuse on the sustainable management and restoration of rangelands, with a national event in Mashonaland West Province under the patronage of the First Lady as Patron of the Environment. The programme will engage miners, government institutions, traditional leaders, schools, civil society, local authorities and communities through keynote messages, educational outreach, media activities and local events across all provinces, highlighting responsible land use, restoration of degraded ecosystems and collective action against land degradation and drought.

The UNCCD and its partners are launching the Silk Road Caravan, an outreach campaign in support of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026. The China segment will involve international stakeholders, media and local communities across Inner Mongolia, the main rangeland regions of the country. Specific activities may include scientific symposiums, field excursions exemplifying good practices in rangeland management, public outreach activities, and cross-border initiatives.  

Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s School of Design, together with partners in Inner Mongolia, will host an academic conference on grassland ecological restoration and desertification control. The event will bring together Chinese and international experts to discuss desertification trends in China, share experience from restoration and sand control efforts and explore future priorities for research, policy and ecosystem governance.

A multimedia awareness campaign highlighting innovative approaches to restoring degraded rangelands in China, through a short documentary video and a feature article, explores how pant microecology technology can help rehabilitate degraded grasslands, rocky slopes and arid landscapes while reducing dependence on intensive irrigation and topsoil replacement. the campaign aims to raise awareness of land degradation, showcase practical restoration solutions, and contribute to global dialogue on ecosystem resilience, sustainable land management and climate adaptation.

This Desertification and Drought Day feature amplifies China’s leadership in large-scale land restoration, highlighting major initiatives such as the Grain for Green Program and the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program. Drawing on insights from UNCCD Chief Scientist Barron Joseph Orr, it showcases how long-term commitment, integrated development planning, science-based restoration, community participation and international cooperation can help restore degraded land and build resilience to desertification and drought.

A consultation will be organized with elected public representatives, community members, local government officials and civil society representatives, with around 150 people expected to participate. Discussions will focus on the challenges of recognizing, respecting and restoring rangelands and pasturelands, the roles of different stakeholders and practical ways to restore this vital resource.

A community driven awareness and demonstration event focused on restoring degraded lands through indigenous natural solutions. Aligned with the global theme “Rangelands: Recognize. Respect. Restore.”, the event will highlight the importance of sustainable grazing systems, traditional ecological knowledge, and low cost bio inputs for improving soil health, water retention, and biodiversity. Through live demonstrations, farmer interactions, and educational outreach, the initiative aims to empower rural communities to combat desertification, enhance drought resilience, and promote regenerative agriculture practices that ensure long-term environmental sustainability and livelihoods.

The event brings together policymakers, state governments, scientists, civil society and development partners to focus on rangeland and grassland restoration. Through technical sessions and panel discussions, participants will explore community stewardship, governance, financing and practical pathways to strengthen livelihoods, biodiversity, climate resilience and food security.

The initiative raised awareness through Telugu-language outreach, including a pamphlet adapted to local conditions, an All India Radio Tirupati interview with Dr. Chandra Kesava Reddy on the Kisan Vani farmers’ programme and a voluntary Andhra Prabha newspaper article titled “Protect Water – Save Future.” Together, these activities helped share key messages on drought prevention, water protection and local action with farmers and communities.

Gram Bharati Samiti organized a plantation management workshop at Gandhivan, its wasteland development project in Todalari village, Jaipur District, Rajasthan. Held under the GROW+ project, the workshop brought together 50 rural farmers, students and community members to learn about tree planting, pre- and post-planting care and key precautions for successful plantation management. The session concluded with visually impaired children distributing saplings planted in painted plastic bottles.

In Rajasthan’s Thar Desert, an ongoing community-driven land restoration initiative is transforming a degraded former mining landscape into a regenerating ecosystem. The project focuses not only on increasing tree cover but on restoring ecological processes through native vegetation, grassland recovery, soil regeneration, water conservation and biodiversity enhancement. The initiative shows how restored ecological relationships can help degraded landscapes recover, allowing native grasses, wildlife and local communities to thrive.

Desertification and Drought Day 2026 brought together around 350 participants, including community leaders, CSO representatives, volunteers and public representatives. The event featured a plantation drive in which 100 pipal trees were planted to support land restoration and environmental awareness.

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan plans to join the symbolic journey, featuring the country’s ecosystem restoration initiatives and integration of conservation and pastoral livelihoods. 

The UNCCD and its partners are launching the Silk Road Caravan, an outreach campaign in support of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026. From engaging various stakeholders around restoration practice in Shymkent to discussing ecological connectivity while spanning the Ile-Alatau grazing valleys and Altyn-Emel National Park, the Silk Road Caravan’s stop in Kazakhstan will champion rangeland regeneration, the coexistence of tradition and modern land use across not only mountain foothills but also arid plateaus, including saiga migration corridors. 

A key element of the Silk Road Caravan Kyrgyzstan segment, the political dialogue conference brought together participants to discuss climate change impacts on rangelands and forests, nature-based solutions, sustainable pasture governance and biodiversity conservation. The event provided a platform to exchange national and international experiences, identify shared challenges and develop recommendations for strengthening sustainable rangeland management, concluding with the adoption of a joint resolution.

The Human Environmental Association for Development, in partnership with the Municipality of Jbeil–Byblos and the Makhzoumi Foundation, organized a community tree-planting campaign at the Byblos Bicycle Sports Track Garden to promote land restoration and urban greening. Bringing together local authorities, volunteers and scout groups, the initiative focused on planting native trees, expanding green spaces, enhancing biodiversity, improving air quality and raising awareness of how local action and partnerships can strengthen climate resilience and restore degraded land.

The UNCCD and its partners are launching the Silk Road Caravan, an outreach campaign in support of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026. The Silk Road Caravan will arrive to Ulaanbaatar just in time for the opening of UNCCD COP17 Mongolia. Rangelands cover about 70 per cent of the country, with nearly 77 per cent of Mongolia’s land already degraded. As this year’s COP17 host, Mongolia plans to launch its Steppe Action Agenda and set the stage for the adoption of the Rangelands Flagship Initiative.

The Institute of Water Problems, Hydropower and Ecology of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office and ESCAP will host a hybrid event in Dushanbe bringing together policymakers, experts and development partners to discuss innovative responses to land degradation and drought. The programme will highlight national efforts, collaborative approaches and the use of Earth Observation technologies to strengthen drought monitoring and resilience, alongside a four-day training on agricultural drought monitoring systems for Tajikistan.

The UNDP-GEF project, implemented with the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan and SIC ICSD, will convene a roundtable with government, international and regional partners to strengthen cooperation on sustainable land management, climate adaptation and land degradation prevention. The event will highlight Turkmenistan’s environmental priorities, Land Degradation Neutrality in land-use planning and practical solutions such as the Peace Forest Initiative in Central Asia.

This webinar will highlight practical ways to address desertification and drought, with Tatiana Antonelli Abella introducing Goumbook’s work to advance sustainability in the MENA region. The session will showcase key initiatives such as Give a Ghaf, share milestones from Goumbook’s journey and highlight opportunities to get involved in restoration and sustainability efforts in the UAE.

Focusing on the implementation of risk reduction strategies and scaling up investment for dryland recovery alongside oasis agriculture and irrigation heritage, the Uzbekistan segment is all about linking evidence to practice. Coinciding with the Global Environment Facility's EighthAssembly in Samarkand, it will bring shelterbelts and wind erosion control, salinity and water management, and monitoring approaches in dryland and oasis landscapes to the spotlight. 

Uzbekistan’s Desertification and Drought Day observance highlights the country’s long-standing commitment to the UNCCD and its ongoing efforts to combat desertification, land degradation and drought. The event emphasizes the importance of healthy land for ecosystems, livelihoods and economic stability, while showcasing national restoration plans, including the establishment of green cover on 251.3 thousand hectares in 2026, with major efforts focused on Muynak district in Karakalpakstan.

The city of Juazeiro, Bahia, will host the seminar , bringing together researchers, government representatives, civil society organizations and local communities to discuss the challenges and responses to land degradation in the Brazilian semi-arid region. The programme includes a panel on the panorama of desertification in Bahia and an interactive "Experience Carousel", showcasing practical initiatives related to sustainable land management, climate adaptation, research and innovation, improved livelihoods and governance to combat desertification.

The seminar, part of Brazil's Jornada da Terra 2026, is organized by Fundaj and INSA in partnership with universities, government institutions and civil society organizations, the event will bring together researchers, public officials, social movements and representatives of traditional communities to discuss the social, political and environmental dimensions of desertification in the Brazilian semi-arid region. Topics include climate extremes, land degradation, carbon markets, critical minerals, renewable energy expansion, environmental justice, public governance and the role of territorial knowledge and social participation in shaping sustainable futures for the Caatinga.

The International Seminar on Combating Desertification, organized by the Center for Strategic Studies and Debates of the Chamber of Deputies in partnership with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and the Environmentalist Parliamentary Front, will bring together government, academia, international organizations, social movements and environmental experts in Brasília and online to discuss strategies for addressing desertification, land degradation, climate change and water security, with a focus on semi-arid regions and their socioeconomic impacts.

Regional preparatory meeting on savannas and grasslands to align Latin American messages for UNCCD COP17 and strengthen regional coordination. Participants will share good practices in sustainable management and restoration and develop concrete technical and policy inputs for focal points and negotiators.

Although grasslands and savannahs are essential for food security, biodiversity, and climate resilience in Latin America, these ecosystems still face a significant gap in representation within public policies and global investment frameworks. To address this gap, and within the framework of both the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026 and Desertification and Drought Day, IUCN (South America and the global Forest and Grasslands team) is convening the Latin America Preparatory Meeting on Grasslands and Savannahs ahead of UNCCD COP17, to be held on June 17 and 18. This strategic space will enable the region to align policy perspectives, strengthen key capacities, and co-design concrete proposals and initiatives ahead of UNCCD COP17 in Mongolia, positioning the conservation of these critical biomes within multilateral Land Degradation Neutrality agendas.

El MARN de Guatemala, a través del Departamento de Lucha contra la Degradación de Tierras, la Desertificación y la Sequía, en coordinación con UICN Guatemala, conmemoró el DDD mediante un evento estratégico que reunió a más de 70 participantes para fortalecer el intercambio de conocimientos, experiencias y alianzas orientadas a impulsar la restauración de ecosistemas, la gestión sostenible de los pastizales, la resiliencia frente a la sequía y el desarrollo sostenible. La actividad contó con la participación de la Oficina Regional de la UNCCD, UICN América del Sur, MAGA, CONAP, la Alianza de Bioversity International y el CIAT, CCAD, WWF, FLAAR Mesoamérica, WFP Guatemala, BCIE, Grupo Vidriera Guatemalteca, AMSCLAE, UNICEF, FAO, CATIE y jóvenes estudiantes de diversas disciplinas, quienes participaron en conferencias técnicas, intercambio de experiencias, un simposio estratégico y un simposio regional con la participación de los Puntos Focales Nacionales de Guatemala, El Salvador, República Dominicana y la CCAD, consolidando un espacio de cooperación interinstitucional y regional.

El evento reunirá a instituciones y actores clave en Lima para reflexionar sobre los impactos de la desertificación, la degradación de tierras y la sequía en el Perú. The Herakleidon Museum support the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought by the United Nations, by bringing together people with different professional profiles and social backgrounds (olive oil producers, winegrowers, artists, institutional representatives, civil society organizations, local authorities), aiming to inform and raise awareness about the Climate Change, Desertification and Drought, support networking between key-role actors and enlarge the space for joint action. The initiative is designed around three main actions: a. Screening of a film regarding desertification, b. Guided tour through an exhibition of art works, c. Storytelling about climate experiences regarding desertification and drought.

The University of Sassari’s Desertification Research Centre and partner departments will host CUSTODES – Desertification Processes and Land Care, a public event exploring the environmental and social challenges of land degradation and climate change in Sardinia. The event will highlight the role of farmers and agrosilvopastoral workers as custodians of land, memory and rural resilience, while presenting participatory research, outreach tools, scientific discussions and project experiences focused on adaptation, land care and community engagement.

The UNCCD and its partners are launching the Silk Road Caravan, an outreach campaign in support of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026. Crossing approximately 1,450 km of diverse rangeland systems from Erzurum to Antalya, the Türkiye segment presents traditional pastoral mobility, steppe land management, dryland agriculture interfaces, and highland summer grazing systems known as yayla culture. It will also highlight the interlinkages between the climate, land and biodiversity agendas in this Triple COP year of the three Rio Conventions.  

As part of the BİLSEM Support Education Framework Curriculum, students took part in a creativity-focused workshop on grassland restoration. The workshop highlighted the urgent ecological and economic impacts of grassland degradation and encouraged students to use creative thinking, information processing and problem-solving skills to develop innovative products, projects and entrepreneurial ideas that support nature restoration.

The workshop provided an important space for exchanging knowledge on climate adaptation, governance, citizen engagement and the role of civil society in designing and implementing locally relevant adaptation measures. It confirmed that effective responses to land degradation, drought and climate-related risks require stronger cooperation between institutions, researchers, practitioners and local communities. It also highlighted that participatory processes and governance mechanisms are crucial for translating nature-based solutions from concepts into practical actions on the ground. UNCCD National Focal Point and Reporting Officer contributed to the discussion by highlighting the importance of soil protection, sustainable land management and reducing land degradation through practical nature-based solutions.

The UNCCD and its partners are launching the Silk Road Caravan, an outreach campaign in support of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026. Encompassing the steppe, semi-desert and delta landscapes in Kalmykia, Dagestan and Astrakhan, this leg of the caravan exhibits recent scientific advances in land restoration and sustainable land management with an emphasis on interregional and cross-border knowledge exchange among researchers and local land users in southern Russia.  

The event highlights the importance of rangelands and pasture-based milk production for protecting soil and water resources, reducing the risks of drought, land degradation and wildfires, and supporting rural producers whose work contributes to food security and quality of life for the wider community. Through this event, academia aims to explain to the public why a small milk producer from a remote rural area matters for people living in cities: the recognition of rangelands, support for milk producers, clean air and water, food quality, climate resilience and greener cities are all part of the same sustainable development policy.

CLARE is a UK-Canada framework research programme on Climate Adaptation and Resilience, aiming to enable socially inclusive and sustainable action to build resilience to climate change and natural hazards in Africa and Asia-Pacific. 

Nn awareness-raising day focused on solutions to combat desertification, highlighting the role of Sahelian plants, local resources and traditional knowledge in protecting and restoring land and supporting communities included activities for children, a market with Sahelian products, a storytelling moment with griot Boubacar Ndiaye on the protection of natural resources, a panel discussion on acacia, the “Trees of Life” exhibition and the inauguration of the new Sahel Greenhouse.

Germany will support the 2026 Desertification and Drought Day global observance in Kenya by co-convening a stakeholders’ roundtable on 12 June in Nairobi through GIZ and Kenya’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development. The roundtable will bring together around 70 participants from government, research, academia, the private sector, civil society and pastoralist communities. Discussions will focus on practical ways to advance sustainable rangeland management and drought resilience.

Organized by the German Institute for Development and Sustainability under this year's theme "Recognize. Respect. Restore", the discussion will focus on rangeland ecosystems.

The open living-room format offers drinks, snacks and conversation in a welcoming space where people can meet, connect and reflect on how to grow a more sustainable future together

The UNCCD Youth Caucus will host an interactive dialogue to strengthen youth participation in addressing desertification, land degradation and drought. The event will bring together young people, youth organizations and stakeholders to showcase youth leadership, exchange experiences and identify practical ways to make youth engagement in the UNCCD process more meaningful, inclusive and impactful, including through the UNCCD Youth Engagement Strategy.

CIEDM conservation professionals are supporting rangeland conservation and ecosystem restoration through online educational outreach, expert commentary and activities based at Arcadia Ecohome. Their work highlights the pressures facing California’s rangelands, including drought, climate change, wildfire risks and invasive species, while sharing practical approaches to land and ecosystem restoration. The initiative also includes efforts to enhance California-friendly landscapes at the Arcadia Ecohome Microforest, especially its Desert Oases, to strengthen climate resilience and raise awareness of the need to recognize, respect and restore rangelands.
