Today, as we face hard times and new pressures, а social contract with nature is needed more than ever. 

The COVID-19 pandemic is not just a public health crisis. It is a threat to the very fabric of society. 

The crisis has shown us that our health, our economies and our food systems are interconnected and fragile. 

Millions of people around the world are battling the virus. My thoughts are with these people.

I also want to pay tribute to all the healthcare workers who every day are risking their lives to fight the pandemic.

The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification stands with you all.

More than ever, we are reminded how much we depend on nature, particularly our land. 

To protect ourselves, we must protect nature. For healthy people, we need healthy landscapes.

Yes, with COVID 19, the rhythm of our lives has changed. 

But we will build back.  And we can build back better. 

We can create a world that is stronger, smarter, safer. 

We can create a world that is green, just and resilient.

We can create a new social contract with nature, together.
