Story
Bonn, Germany – The Global Mechanism (GM) of UNCCD participated in the Global Landscapes Forum on 2 December 2018 to discuss how the convention is working with 120 countries that are establishing targets to achieve land degradation neutrality (LDN) by 2030. While the countries are undertaking the technical and political steps to identify degraded areas in their landscapes and define necessary land restoration measures, the GM team can help them to devise the plan of action and connect with development partners and funders to chart the SDG targets into the real projects on the ground.
Discussing how the land issues are connected to overall global challenges, the Managing Director of the GM Juan Carlos Mendoza highlighted the importance of helping consumers to understand that their choices can influence greenhouse gas emissions, land degradation and other environmental processes that require behavioral change. He also emphasized the need to invest in initiatives that combine activities leading to global benefits such as carbon sequestration with meaningful outcomes for communities that undertake these actions.
The Global Landscapes Forum is the world’s leading knowledge platform that connects people with a shared vision to create productive, profitable, equitable and resilient landscapes. This year, GLF2018 attracted more than 2,000 participants – as well as millions more through the online edition – from investors to indigenous groups, policy makers, scientists, farmers and youth to learn from each other, engage in thought-provoking debate, share success stories and move from commitments to actions.
