Story
Bonn, Germany/Laxenburg Austria – UNCCD and the International institute of applied systems analysis (IIASA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 30 September 2020 to promote the application of integrated system analyses in support of science, technology and UNCCD implementation. This MoU builds on shared priorities and strategic vision of both institutions to advance transformational changes that help achieve sustainable development goals, in particularly SDG15.3 on Land degradation Neutrality.
UNCCD Deputy Executive Secretary Dr. Pradeep Monga remarked upon signing the MoU that investing in nature is fundamental to build back better in the wake of COVID-19 and create a resilient future. To ensure that this investment is allocated in the right place at the right time and at the right scale, it is essential to highlight the role of science, technology and innovation as key components that support integrated policy solutions for sustainable development. The global imperative to achieve sustainable development and climate goals by 2030 drives the need to find smart solutions that promote food, water and energy security. Sustainable land management supported by smart agricultural and water management policies and practices together with transformative production approaches and innovative business models to enable creating sustainable value chains can help achieve land degradation neutrality.
The two organizations will work closely in the next five years on the MoU implementation to promote knowledge building, collaborative development and development of tools and methodologies, The MOU, which provides a strategic framework for further cooperation between the two institutions, will help translate scientific research results into concrete policy recommendations.
The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) was established in 1972 as an independent international research institute with National Member Organizations in Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe. Through its research programs and initiatives, the institute conducts policy-oriented research on issues too large or complex to be solved by a single country or academic discipline. This includes pressing concerns that affect the future of all of humanity, such as climate change, energy security, population aging and sustainable development.
