Dynamics causal patterns of desertification

Using a meta-analytical research design, the authors analyzed subnational case studies (n = 132) on the causes of dryland degradation, also referred to as desertification, to determine whether the proximate causes and underlying driving forces fall into any pattern and to identify mediating factors, feedback mechanisms, cross-scalar dynamics, and typical pathways of dryland ecosystem change.

Land degradation neutrality: The science-policy interface from the UNCCD to national implementation

This paper examines the development of the scientific basis for LDN and how the team of global scientific experts in neutrality approaches worked in parallel with the teams who were conducting training events to launch the LDN target setting programme (TSP). We then move from the scientific conceptual framework to the challenges in the arena of policy making and policy implementation that are…

The Human Dimension of desertification in the drylands of Africa

Desertification is land degradation in drylands. The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that one third of the drylands in Africa are affected by desertification at moderate or high degree and that 73 per cent of the total agriculturally used drylands are already degraded. While physical factors such as drought, desiccation and climate change can, and do, playa part, man however, is…

Modelling hot spots of soil loss by wind erosion (SoLoWind) in Western Saxony, Germany

While it needs yet to be assessed whether or not wind erosion in Western Saxony is a major point of concern regarding land degradation and fertility, it has already been recognized that considerable off-site effects of wind erosion in the adjacent regions of Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg are connected to the spread of herbicides, pesticides and dust. So far, no wind erosion assessment for Western…
