Accredited CSO
The UNCCD COP recognizes that the involvement and participation of the civil society is vital to the successful implementation of this Convention. It therefore welcomes the contribution of CSOs, with particular regard to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to the official meetings of the UNCCD.
Representatives from CSOs that are accredited to the COP may directly participate in the UNCCD secretariat’s sessions. At these sessions CSOs are consulted on United Nation’s policy and programme matters. They also play key roles at major United Nations conferences as indispensable partners for efforts at the country level. Below are the current accredited CSO's to the Convention.
Promotes watershed management and soil and water conservation practices. Carries out tree planting campaigns and promotes the establishment of farm tree nursery beds. Promotes incomegenerating activities that contribute towards the alleviation of rural poverty. Builds grass-roots_x000D_ capacity of rural communities to effectively participate and be fully involved in activities that affect their livelihoods. Capacity-building for the benefit of individual farmers in the use of appropriate technology.
Promotes and undertakes initiatives to implement the three Rio conventions (CBD, UNFCCC and UNCCD). Proposes initiatives to strengthen public awareness in order to fulfil the aims of the conventions. Supports the establishment in other countries of organizations with similar aims._x000D_ Manages a website that offers non-governmental organizations the possibility of launching appeals to support environmental issues related to the three conventions. Facilitates the exchange of information among organizations involved in the implementation of the conventions.
Organizes vocational training for women in different trades. Assists in the formation of women’s self-help groups. Facilitates their operations and imparts training to farmers on advanced methods of farming and cultivation, and on the management of irrigation channels and drainage systems._x000D_ Promotes solar lights and cookers and biogas. Implements programmes for agricultural development and the management of human and natural resources. Implements a Food for Work_x000D_ Programme of the WFP.
Monitors a database on the degradation of local ecosystems. Prepares studies and research on the_x000D_ degradation of agricultural land on the Cataractes Plateau and in the Niari Valley. Facilitates cooperation between the population and scientists on environmental and sustainable development issues. Has developed a cartographic map of the deterioration of forests on the plateau.
Participates in a bilateral project implementing a participatory technology development process for integrated farming on drylands. Works at the grass-roots level implementing anti-desertification activities. Assists local farmers, self-help groups and women with micro credit. Promotes voluntary efforts in rural development through the building up of local institutions and training of workers. Undertakes land development programmes such as afforestation and soil and water management.
Organizes discussion panels on environmental issues such as water supply, land degradation and desertification. Collaborates with the governmental focal point in the implementation of the National Action Programme. Disseminates information on United Nations programmes and_x000D_ activities to the local population and other civil organizations.
Formulates studies of the biophysical and socioeconomic characteristics of drylands in order to identify environmental benchmarks and indicators. Participates in the preparation, evaluation and monitoring of the national action programme. Organizes regional and local workshops on UNCCDrelated issues. Promotes the transfer of technology in sustainable production so as to ensure food security. Carries out consultancies on the use of organic fertilizers and the establishment, management and use of forests and reforestation.
Implements activities targeted at recovering arid lands in Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Undertakes the project Conservation of Arid and Semi-arid Ecosystems in the Caucasus. Organizes large-scale education campaigns on land use targeted at shepherds and local authorities. Assists the Government of Georgia in the preparation of the UNCCD national action programme for the country.
Organizes different workshops on pest management addressed to farmers from all over Lebanon. Undertakes environmental activities for children and youth. Manages an environmental craft centre for women aimed at generating additional income. Is developing an agro-development project for degraded lands of Lebanon in partnership with other European NGOs. Administers microcredit loans for those women in the rural areas of Mount Lebanon who want to start small private businesses.
Holds annual students, workshops on protection of the flora and fauna of the United Arab Emirates. Organizes a waste management and recycling project group to collect different non-degradable materials and to promote the recycling centres. Initiates and participates in green campaigns in the educational system with the aim of raising awareness of the need to protect biodiversity, habitats and green cover. Liaises with various target groups in the community, particularly school children, in order to spread the environmental message.
