This volume presents the investigations of the study group"Desertification in extremely arid environments". The members report on their investigation results and work concentrated on oases, Northern Africa and Near East. Those parts of old world deserts seem to be characteristic, offering a good insight into the problems because of widespread desertification.
The present volume reproduces edited versions of six case studies commissioned by UNESCO and supported by UNDP summarized in a chapter and present some general conslusions arising from the experience of desertification and measures to combat it.
