GOAL 15 - LIFE ON LAND
15.1 By 2020, ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands, mountains and drylands, in line with obligations under international agreements.
15.2 By 2020, promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally.
15.3 By 2030, combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, drought and floods, and strive to achieve a land degradation neutral world.
15.4By 2030, ensure the conservation of mountain ecosystems, including their biodiversity, in order to enhance their capacity to provide benefits that are essential for sustainable development.
Understand:
Facts and Figures•Thirteen million hectares of forests are lost every year. •Around 1.6 billion people depend on forests for their livelihood. This includes some 70 million indigenous people. Forests are home to more than 80% of all terrestrial species of animals, plants and insects. •2.6 billion people depend directly on agriculture, but 52% of the land used for agriculture is moderately or severely affected by soil degradation. •Due to drought and desertification each year, 12 million hectares are lost (23 hectares per minute), where 20 million tons of grain could have been grown. •Of the 8,300 animal breeds known, 8% are extinct and 22% are at risk of extinction. •As many as 80% of people living in rural areas in developing countries rely on traditional plant - based medicines for basic healthcare.
This info pack explores the topic of protecting, restoring and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably managed forests, combating desertification, and halting and reversing land degredation and biodiversity loss, the focus of SDG 15 and includes:
1) Easy-read introductory exploration of ideas and realities behind conserving, restoring, and sustainably managing life on land
2) A 4-step approach – Explore the Goal; Understand; Act; Share
3) Key facts, statistics and videos
4) 4 personal challenges for participants to work through
Info packs are updated monthly based on the workshops schedule and activity of monthly #SDGchallenge workshops. Workshop themes rotate once-per month based on each Goal.
What is the #SDGchallenge?
The #SDGchallenge is a development education project which aims to equip individuals with the knowledge, skills and motivation to take informed action to contribute towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The #SDGchallenge is led by Irish NGO Development Perspectives.
The SDG Challenge focuses on the non-formal learning sector, with many entry points in order to ensure easy and diverse levels of participation.
