How to minimize risks and losses from drought in Central Asia and Eastern Europe?
The press service of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and Drought (UNCCD) invited journalists from the region to discuss this topic. This is what was discussed at the online briefing with UN experts
To begin with, not the best forecast for the planet: by 2050, over 75 percent of the population will live in drought-prone areas. Drought indicators have worsened since the middle of the last century: they happened more often and arid areas increased. And in the mid-seventies, the trend became apparent. Another half century passed. And scientists have made a daunting forecast of increasing dryness around the world.
What follows from this? Soil drought, dust storms, soil erosion and degradation, decreased yields, loss of biodiversity. Then one should expect fierce competition for resources, conflicts, migration, environmental refugees ...
Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification and Drought suggest minimizing risks. How to do this was written down in the 2018–2030 Strategy Framework. The Conference of the Parties to the Convention urged countries to develop national strategies, plans and programs of action, and multilateral and bilateral partners called for support in this
We did not speak about national plans specifically at the briefing. Journalists themselves must show initiative and thoroughly find out in the republican structures how their training is going. Discussed common issues such as how to manage drought risk.
“If we cannot avoid them, then we can adapt,” UN experts say. Advice to the farmer: follow the sowing rules, use innovative agricultural techniques, drought-resistant crops, and prepare safety stocks of feed. What does a farmer expect from government agencies? Forecast...
