The world faces a great balancing act. How will the world adequately feed nearly 10 billion people by 2050 in a manner that advances economic development and reduces pressure on the environment, while adapting to climate change? This requires balancing three needs. First, the world needs to close a roughly 70 percent gap between the crop calories available in 2006 and those needed by 2050 (the “food gap”). Second, the world needs agriculture to contribute to inclusive economic and social development. Third, the world needs to reduce agriculture’s impact on the environment.
