Heat and dry periods are increasing in this country. This trend means that the floors are bone dry. A temporary phenomenon? Or do we have to get used to it? 2018 and 2019 were two dry years with us in Germany. And so far it looks bad in 2020. "The current drought is really exceptional due to the long duration, the area affected and the degree of drought," says Andreas Marx from the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research (UFZ).
In the course of climate change, Germany is far from desertification, the scientist says. Nevertheless: Our floors have a long memory. If they are not supplied with sufficient rainfall over a longer period of time, they will stop working.
Highest drying level
NASA's warnings are becoming more and more haunting. Your exploration flights show a clear trend towards ever drier soils across Europe. In Germany there is hardly any water down to a depth of 1.80 meters.
Soils in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Thuringia and Bavaria are particularly at risk. There is the highest of five drying levels. Scattered heavy rains have no effect. "In order to compensate for the water deficit in the soil to greater depths, above-average rainfall over several months is necessary," says Andreas Marx from the UFZ.
