Accredited CSO
Civil society organizations
The UNCCD COP recognizes that the involvement and participation of the civil society is vital to the successful implementation of this Convention. It therefore welcomes the contribution of CSOs, with particular regard to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to the official meetings of the UNCCD.
Representatives from CSOs that are accredited to the COP may directly participate in the UNCCD secretariat’s sessions. At these sessions CSOs are consulted on United Nation’s policy and programme matters. They also play key roles at major United Nations conferences as indispensable partners for efforts at the country level. Below are the current accredited CSO's to the Convention.
Facilitates the exchange of information and knowledge on natural and forestry environments. Promotes international cooperation on environmental, technical and social aspects particularly in the development of forestry environments. Organizes talk-shops, expositions and national and international meetings aimed at environmental and development issues.
Conducts training courses on local sustainable development, environmental education, agricultural ecology and the protection of natural resources. Implements projects in partnership with country-based organizations in Burkina Faso, Mali and Tunisia aimed at rehabilitating the land and empowering the local community to manage their own natural resources.
Represents French NGOs in discussions with the French Government and international agencies on cooperation policies; coordinates NGO environmental awareness campaigns.
Provides legal assistance on international instruments and on land reclamation programmes in affected areas.
Manages an information action plan for youth in the fight against desertification. Organizes summer workcamps through north-south excahnges, on tree planting, reafforestation and other activities devoted to the preservation and restoration of the nature heritage.
Provides financial support to partner NGOs in developing countries to assist the implementation of anti-desertification and sustainable agriculture programmes. Published a study on desertification as source material for the European Commission to whom it assists.
Is the major source of geographical information and a focal point for geographical and exploration activity in Britain; aims toward the improvement and diffusion of geographical knowledge, including dryland environments.
Aims to strengthen communities through self-help initiatives. Projects undertaken in collaboration with partner organizations include: the construction of community woodlots, the development of central seed nurseries, roadside planting of trees, and the introduction of suitably adapted tree and fruit varieties. Develops partnerships between Northern and Southern countries aimed at exchanging experiences and strengthening collaboration. Organises seminars on environment and development issues and encourages the participation of civil society, public institutions, experts and enterprises. Promotes Italian engagement in the implementation of the Convention.
