Gagner le prix « Land for Life »… un an plus tard

M. Mathieu Ouédraogo, fondateur et président de Réseau MARP au Burkina Faso, a reçu les honneurs en 2019, alors que le projet collectif qu’il porte s’est mérité le « Land for Life Award » décerné par la CNULCD. 

Récemment, le projet a également été reconnu par les Energy Globe Awards.

À une semaine de l’ouverture de la campagne de nomination pour le « 2021 Land for Life Award » et dans un contexte mondial précaire, M. Ouédraogo partage l’importance que le prix revêt pour lui et pour les bénéficiaires du projet. 

En quoi le projet a-t-il évolué depuis un an, alors que vous a été décerné le « Land for Life Award » ?

Le projet a bien évolué depuis la distinction du prix Land for Life Award de la CNULCD. En effet, cette distinction m’a conforté dans ma dynamique et je suis plus que jamais déterminé à aller au bout de mes rêves. Avec les communautés, je veux promouvoir une sécurité alimentaire durable à travers l’agroécologie, tout en développant la résilience des populations rurales dans la gestion rationnelle des ressources naturelles. Tout cela dans le but de soutenir le plaidoyer pour la « fin de la faim », possible par la proactivité et le dynamisme des couches paysannes qui participent au processus de développement des communautés.

En quoi le contexte actuel de la pandémie de COVID-19 ajoute des défis supplémentaires à la mise en œuvre de votre projet ? Comment surmontez-vous les obstacles ? 

Certes la situation actuelle avec COVID-19 ajoute des défis à notre projet. Par contre, nous sommes convaincus que l’approche participative promue par notre organisation est susceptible de lever toutes contraintes à la mise en œuvre effective des activités du projet sur le terrain. Par exemple, nous avons mis en place un comité d’éveil dans chaque village et un suivi des consignes de sécurité enseignées est assuré.

Qu'est-ce que cela représente pour vous et pour Réseau MARP de gagner le Energy Globe Awards, un an après avoir obtenu la reconnaissance de la CNULCD ?

L’obtention de ce prix représente pour moi et pour mon organisation une reconnaissance et un tremplin. Une reconnaissance, parce que ce prix couronne les labeurs consentis depuis plusieurs années (depuis 1979 !) auprès de la population paysanne du Burkina Faso. Un tremplin, car ce prix nous invite, mon organisation et moi, à affiner davantage de stratégies pour un accompagnement responsable, durable et résiliant des populations paysannes du Burkina Faso.

Votre souhait pour la suite, ce que vous désirez pour Réseau MARP-Burkina ?

Pour le Réseau MARP-Burkina, je souhaiterais que davantage d’opportunités de partenariat aux plans technique et financier s’ouvrent afin de faciliter le processus d’accompagnement des populations. Aussi je souhaiterais que les partenaires et acteurs du RMARP soient davantage convaincus de la pertinence de son approche et de sa stratégie d’intervention afin de donner à la structure plus d’autonomie et de dynamisme afin d’atteindre sa vision (LA FIN DE LA FAIM).

Winning the Land for Life Award… a year later

Mr. Mathieu Ouédraogo, founder and president of Réseau MARP in Burkina Faso, received the honours in 2019, when his collective project won the Land for Life Award, a distinction given by the UNCCD. 
Recently, the project was also recognized by the Energy Globe Awards.

One week before the opening of the nomination campaign for the 2021 Land for Life Award and in a precarious global context, Mr. Ouédraogo shares the importance of the award for him and the beneficiaries of the project. 

How has the project evolved over the past year, when you were awarded the Land for Life Award?

The project has come a long way since the UNCCD's Land for Life Award. Indeed, this distinction has strengthened my dynamic and I am more determined than ever to follow my dreams. Together with the communities, I promote sustainable food security through agro-ecology, while developing the resilience of rural populations in the rational management of natural resources. All of this in order to support advocacy for the "End of Hunger" (Fin à la Faim), made possible by the proactivity and dynamism of the farmers participating in the community development process.

How does the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic add additional challenges to the implementation of your project? How do you overcome the obstacles?

For sure, the current situation with COVID-19 adds challenges to our project! On the other hand, we are convinced that the participatory approach promoted by our organization is likely to remove any constraints to the effective implementation of project activities in the field. For example, we have set up an early learning committee (educational workshops) in each village and a follow-up of the safety instructions taught is ensured.

What does it mean for you and Réseau MARP to win the Energy Globe Awards, one year after gaining recognition from the UNCCD?

Receiving this additional award is a recognition and a springboard for me and my organization. A recognition, because this prize crowns the work that has been done for several years (since 1979!) among the rural population of Burkina Faso. A springboard, because this prize invites my organization to further refine strategies for responsible, sustainable and resilient accompaniment of the farming community in Burkina Faso and the rest of the Sahel.

What do you wish for the future of Réseau MARP-Burkina Faso?

I would like to see more partnership opportunities at the technical and financial levels in order to facilitate the support process for the populations. Also, I would like the partners and actors of Réseau MARP to be more convinced of the relevance of its approach and intervention strategy, in order to give the structure more autonomy and dynamism to achieve its vision, the End of Hunger (Fin à la Faim).
