UNGA adopts resolution on UNCCD implementation

New York, USA – On Friday 17 December 2021, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution on the implementation of UNCCD, recognizing that combating desertification, land degradation and drought are important for sustainable, inclusive and climate-resilient recovery from the COVID-19 crisis. 

The resolution affirms that land restoration and sustainable land management offer a clear pathway to accelerate the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals, protect livelihoods, ensure sustainable food production and improve the resilience of ecosystems and communities vulnerable to the effect of climate change.

The resolution reaffirms that achieving land degradation neutrality can act a catalyst for attracting sustainable development and climate finance to implement UNCCD and the overall objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

It recognizes the critical role of healthy land in the global economy and calls to promote consumption and production patterns that contribute to the conservation, protection, sustainable management and restoration of land and forest resources.
