Accredited CSO
The UNCCD COP recognizes that the involvement and participation of the civil society is vital to the successful implementation of this Convention. It therefore welcomes the contribution of CSOs, with particular regard to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to the official meetings of the UNCCD.
Representatives from CSOs that are accredited to the COP may directly participate in the UNCCD secretariat’s sessions. At these sessions CSOs are consulted on United Nation’s policy and programme matters. They also play key roles at major United Nations conferences as indispensable partners for efforts at the country level. Below are the current accredited CSO's to the Convention.
Designs and applies energy efficient, forest conserving technologies in the peri-desert settlements. Promotes the use of energy efficient building technology in arid areas, especially traditional technology such as wind-catchers, adobe (mud-brick) architecture to eliminate the need for wood-beams. Conducts studies on sustainable traditional water conservation systems (Qanat), water_x000D_ harvesting systems, nomadism and development with respect to environmental_x000D_ protection systems and traditional rangeland improvement techniques.
Coordinates the Latin American network on environmental law. Works with government offices to develop environmental legislation. Promotes rural development projects, working directly with local populations
Initiates support programmes for arid zone agribusiness; promotes rural entrepreneurship based on sustainable agriculture.
Implements poverty alleviation and population projects. Networks with national NGOs. Holds regular village-level for a as well as national seminars to enhance NGO educational and advocacy skills
Acts as a facilitator, creating awareness amongst the rural communities to enable them to undertake their own development programmes. Conducts surveys to identify problems faced by the rural communities and thereafter assists them to formulate village development plans.
acts as a network for Norwegian based NGOs that are working in drylands in Africa; carries out studies in relation to development projects dealing with food security, and natural resource management in the drylands; holds seminars and workshops on sustainable development in these areas; and raises awareness among the Norwegian community on the UNCCD and on how DCG activities can be used in the follow-up to the Convention.
Does advanced work for international agencies, for example on global assessment of human induced soil degradation (GLASOD), World Atlas of Desertification, and World Soils and Terrain Digital Database (SOTER).
Together with environmental justice groups from poor and developing countries, Both ENDS works towards a sustainable, fair and inclusive world. We gather and share information about policy and investments that have a direct impact on people and their livelihood, we engage in joint advocacy, we stimulate the dialogue between stakeholders and we promote and support sustainable local alternatives.
Encourages the introduction of private forestry at village level including the rehabilitation and protection of crop soils. Promotes market gardening and greening areas through tree plantations. Provides technical and training support to ensure the effective participation of the rural community in all programmes. Raises awareness on combatting desertification.
organizes information and awareness campaigns on the effects of desertification; carries out reforestation projects through the construction of tree plantations and awareness-raising seminars; supports the development of natural areas with management and supervision programmes; and establishes partnerships with other national and local NGOs.
