Civil society organizations
The UNCCD COP recognizes that the involvement and participation of the civil society is vital to the successful implementation of this Convention. It therefore welcomes the contribution of CSOs, with particular regard to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to the official meetings of the UNCCD.
Representatives from CSOs that are accredited to the COP may directly participate in the UNCCD secretariat’s sessions. At these sessions CSOs are consulted on United Nation’s policy and programme matters. They also play key roles at major United Nations conferences as indispensable partners for efforts at the country level. Below are the current accredited CSO's to the Convention.
Is the major source of geographical information and a focal point for geographical and exploration activity in Britain; aims toward the improvement and diffusion of geographical knowledge, including dryland environments.
Aims to strengthen communities through self-help initiatives. Projects undertaken in collaboration with partner organizations include: the construction of community woodlots, the development of central seed nurseries, roadside planting of trees, and the introduction of suitably adapted tree and fruit varieties. Encourages economic activities for women, such as mushroom farming, bee-keeping, snail farming and woodlots in order to assist in the empowerment of women. Conducts environmental education programmes and environmental awareness campaigns. Undertakes agroforestry, afforestation and sustainable agricultural projects and research.
Disseminates information particularly newspaper articles, and conducts awareness campaigns on desertification. Lobbies governments and agencies to implement environment related activities. Establishes demonstration nurseries and agro-forestry projects.
Creates women’s groups in agroforestry for income generation. Trains local people, farmers and youth groups in tree nursing and planting activities. Develops loan schemes to improve local economies.
Promotes appropriate energy technologies for rural communities, particularly solar heaters, biogas digesters, and phtovoltaic solar kits. Assists in the construction of multiple-use micro-dams.
Provides relevant services that enhance women’s efforts in developing socio-economic activities, such as easy access to credit for rural women. Endeavours to influence policy decisions on gender issues, including those related to combatting desertification.
Contributes to the protection of the environment of the Mediterranean region by conducting research, study and education on Mediterranean issues. Promotes co-operation and collaboration on environmental issues and sustainable development amongst the Mediterranean peoples, NGOs, Governments and_x000D_ Parliamentarians of the region.
Organizes awareness-raising workshops on soil erosion, water pollution, reduced water supply, deforestation, biomass losses and desertification. Runs a training and production centre on woollen carpets providing alternative income for women, and a computer training centre providing training for rural communities.
Promotes activities to counter unplanned deforestation, improper management of land and water, and the growth of wastelands.
