To conclude the works of the Portuguese Presidency of the EU Council, and also in the context of the celebrations of the desertification and drought day, the Portuguese Presidency of the EU Council will hold a webinar on 25 June (14.30-16.30 CET) to discuss the pressures on Soil. What indications do we have of this pressure and what solutions are available to us? The webinar will be moderated by Cristina Branquinho Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes, who will give the wider context of these different topics while making the holistic and integrated approach of the three important conventions: UNCCD, Climate Change and Biodiversity, and features national and international experts in the field of landscape, agriculture and biodiversity. To mark the start of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, this event in the margins of twenty-fifth anniversary of UN Bonn will bring together UNCCD, Global Landscapes Forum, IFOAM and Fairtrade will discuss land restoration and land–nature–climate–agriculture–consumption nexus Register here.

The 2021 Desertification and Drought Day to be held on 17 June will focus on turning degraded land into healthy land. Restoring degraded land brings economic resilience, creates jobs, raises incomes and increases food security. It helps biodiversity to recover. It locks away the atmospheric carbon warming the Earth, slowing climate change. It can also lessen the impacts of climate change and underpin a green recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will work with the Ministry of Environment (MINAE) of Costa Rica, the host of the global observance, to encourage households, communities, private sector and countries to have a better relationship with nature as we recover from COVID-19. The event is co-hosted by Türkiye and Hungary, chair and vice-chair of the UNCCD regional Annex IV (Northern Mediterranean region) with the support of the UNCCD Secretariat. The conference will be organized in an online format to include a presentation on the EU policy for COVID-19 recovery in the context of UNCCD implementation, a presentation of LDN good practices by Türkiye and the experience of Hungary in the LDN indicator refinement. The President of the General Assembly will convene a High-level Dialogue to assess the progress made in the fight against DLDD during the UN Decade for Deserts and the Fight against Desertification and and map the way forward. More info...
