Civil society organizations
The UNCCD COP recognizes that the involvement and participation of the civil society is vital to the successful implementation of this Convention. It therefore welcomes the contribution of CSOs, with particular regard to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to the official meetings of the UNCCD.
Representatives from CSOs that are accredited to the COP may directly participate in the UNCCD secretariat’s sessions. At these sessions CSOs are consulted on United Nation’s policy and programme matters. They also play key roles at major United Nations conferences as indispensable partners for efforts at the country level. Below are the current accredited CSO's to the Convention.
Works with government ministries and local communities in the formulation of environmental policies. Arranges local conferences.
Promotes alternative, sustainable land use schemes such as agroforestry systems as an alternative to soil degrading monocultures. Integrates natural, primary and secondary forest management practices with community participation. Implements plantation forestry systems as a means to rehabilitate degraded lands and provide an alternative production activity for fragile areas. Conducts economic valuations of ecosystem functions as a means to demonstrate their real value to society.
As scientific institution, publishes annual reports on global environmental change, in particular on global soil degradation and on the global dimensions of water degradation.
Aims to bring awareness of environment and development issues to the German public, through discussion groups. Coordinates activities of national NGOs involved in environmental and developmental issues.
Advocates and supports the role of pastoral cultures and their indigenous knowledge systems in making sustainable use of arid lands. Current regional programme is focused on the Thar Desert, India. Conducts extensive research with camel pastoral groups inhabiting the extreme arid zone.
Aims to bring awareness of the environment and development issues to the German and European public through meetings and seminars.
Supports programmes to reforest degraded land. Sensitizes public to significance of firewood as a major cause of desertification
Facilitates the exchange of information and knowledge on natural and forestry environments. Promotes international cooperation on environmental, technical and social aspects particularly in the development of forestry environments. Organizes talk-shops, expositions and national and international meetings aimed at environmental and development issues.
Conducts training courses on local sustainable development, environmental education, agricultural ecology and the protection of natural resources. Implements projects in partnership with country-based organizations in Burkina Faso, Mali and Tunisia aimed at rehabilitating the land and empowering the local community to manage their own natural resources.
Represents French NGOs in discussions with the French Government and international agencies on cooperation policies; coordinates NGO environmental awareness campaigns.
