The UNCCD COP recognizes that the involvement and participation of the civil society is vital to the successful implementation of this Convention. It therefore welcomes the contribution of CSOs, with particular regard to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to the official meetings of the UNCCD.

Representatives from CSOs that are accredited to the COP may directly participate in the UNCCD secretariat’s sessions. At these sessions CSOs are consulted on United Nation’s policy and programme matters. They also play key roles at major United Nations conferences as indispensable partners for efforts at the country level. Below are the current accredited CSO's to the Convention.

Sets up craft development centres which provide training, raw materials, product development and marketing aimed at creating self-employment. Conducts training in plant grafting to enable the raising of anti-desertification fruit and non-fruit saplings. Assists in the purchase, storage and distribution of fodder for cattle breeding. Encourages water harvesting activities.

Centre for Sustainable Development Studies and Application

Designs and applies energy efficient, forest conserving technologies in the peri-desert settlements. Promotes the use of energy efficient building technology in arid areas, especially traditional technology such as wind-catchers, adobe (mud-brick) architecture to eliminate the need for wood-beams. Conducts studies on sustainable traditional water conservation systems (Qanat), water_x000D_ harvesting systems, nomadism and development with respect to environmental_x000D_ protection systems and traditional rangeland improvement techniques.

Prepares reports on water use and conservation in the Middle-East, particularly related to the Jordan river basin. Promotes the use of renewable energy and sustainable tourism for the Eastern Mediterranean/Middle-East region. Undertakes electronic mail training courses for environmentalists and reviews development projects.
