Accredited CSO
The UNCCD COP recognizes that the involvement and participation of the civil society is vital to the successful implementation of this Convention. It therefore welcomes the contribution of CSOs, with particular regard to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to the official meetings of the UNCCD.
Representatives from CSOs that are accredited to the COP may directly participate in the UNCCD secretariat’s sessions. At these sessions CSOs are consulted on United Nation’s policy and programme matters. They also play key roles at major United Nations conferences as indispensable partners for efforts at the country level. Below are the current accredited CSO's to the Convention.
Provides relevant services that enhance women’s efforts in developing socio-economic activities, such as easy access to credit for rural women. Endeavours to influence policy decisions on gender issues, including those related to combatting desertification.
Contributes to the protection of the environment of the Mediterranean region by conducting research, study and education on Mediterranean issues. Promotes co-operation and collaboration on environmental issues and sustainable development amongst the Mediterranean peoples, NGOs, Governments and_x000D_ Parliamentarians of the region.
Organizes awareness-raising workshops on soil erosion, water pollution, reduced water supply, deforestation, biomass losses and desertification. Runs a training and production centre on woollen carpets providing alternative income for women, and a computer training centre providing training for rural communities.
Promotes activities to counter unplanned deforestation, improper management of land and water, and the growth of wastelands.
Sets up craft development centres which provide training, raw materials, product development and marketing aimed at creating self-employment. Conducts training in plant grafting to enable the raising of anti-desertification fruit and non-fruit saplings. Assists in the purchase, storage and distribution of fodder for cattle breeding. Encourages water harvesting activities.
Organises training programmes and projects in fields such as wasteland development, traditional wells, soil conservation and afforestation
Designs and applies energy efficient, forest conserving technologies in the peri-desert settlements. Promotes the use of energy efficient building technology in arid areas, especially traditional technology such as wind-catchers, adobe (mud-brick) architecture to eliminate the need for wood-beams. Conducts studies on sustainable traditional water conservation systems (Qanat), water_x000D_ harvesting systems, nomadism and development with respect to environmental_x000D_ protection systems and traditional rangeland improvement techniques.
Prepares reports on water use and conservation in the Middle-East, particularly related to the Jordan river basin. Promotes the use of renewable energy and sustainable tourism for the Eastern Mediterranean/Middle-East region. Undertakes electronic mail training courses for environmentalists and reviews development projects.
Organizes a course for teachers on environmental problems. Carries out surveys on environmental hazards in the region. Elaborates documents on alternative land use and combined treatment of solid waste to be distributed among decision makers and the local and national media.
Develops partnerships between Northern and Southern countries aimed at exchanging experiences and strengthening collaboration. Organises seminars on environment and development issues and encourages the participation of civil society, public institutions, experts and enterprises. Promotes Italian engagement in the implementation of the Convention.
