Currently, almost one-fourth of the people in the world under the age of 35 are living in Africa. A whopping 60 per cent of the continent’s population is under the age of 25. While this booming young demographic comes with a fair share of livelihood challenges, it also presents enormous opportunities for restoring African landscapes through green jobs and new means of sustainable agriculture. In this Global Landscape Forum Instagram Live on 20 April at 14:00 CEST / 15:00 EAT, four young African environmentalists will come together to discuss the efforts they’re making to transform their landscapes to be vibrant, valuable and sustainable for the future. Moderated by Kenyan environmentalist Wambui Paula Waibochi, Adrian Leitoro, the Global Landscapes Forum’s 2022 Restoration Steward for drylands, Safiatou Nana from the Ouagadougou chapter of the GLFx restoration initiative, and Patricia Kombo, a UNCCD Land Hero, will exchange solutions and discuss what leadership looks like in the African context. As we mark the World Water Day 2022, join us for this event one engage with global stakeholders to discuss the effectiveness of investment for drought management. The event will provide a touchpoint for the identified climate finance challenges in developing countries, the discrepancies in accessing and using such funds, and the issue of effective investment absorption in the current fiscal and debt The session will foster a multi-stakeholder dialogue, including governments, civil society, academic, private sector, etc. for a wider support to such recognition. The event presents a unique perspective on drought finance and invites the voices of beneficiaries of numerous climate programmes. The objective of the session is to showcase the complexity of drought impacts across sectors and communities and reflect on the opportunities to effectively address them through innovative and more effective finance approaches. The recently launched UNEP report Making Peace with Nature highlights that climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution add up to three planetary crises caused by societies’ unsustainable consumption and productions that are closely interconnected and put the well-being of current and future generations at unacceptable risk. Moreover, women bear the uneven burden of environmental impact – the triple planetary crisis – whether as food producers, or those entrusted with securing water and fuel for the family.  Join us for a discussion on the gendered dimensions of the triple planetary crisis within the context of recovering from gender differentiated impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gender equality is vital to deliver sustainable, progressive, and meaningful action to avoid, reduce and reverse land degradation. UNCCD’s goal is to make sure women and girls are empowered in the global efforts to achieve land degradation neutrality.​ Ahead of the UNCCD COP15 and to mark the IWD 2022, UNCCD Land Ambassadors and Land Heroes will meet for an intergenerational dialogue on the effects of desertification and drought in their regions, particularly for women. They will discuss which initiatives and policies empower women as community leaders for land restoration and how to advocate effectively for positive change.
